Ahhh, The Outback… We had a bit of a mad dash through the region heading inland from Townsville on a Sunday and being back in Brisbane the following Saturday to celebrate Warrick’s 40th… Nonetheless, we had a fantastic taste of Queensland’s outback which included Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Winton, Longreach, Chinchilla, Roma and all the towns in between.
The highlights were:
- Free camping at Corella Dam – this magnificent lake is located between Cloncurry and Mt Isa and you’d totally miss it if you didn’t know it was there. What an oasis in this very rugged, dry land. The colours were truly stunning and we even had our very own woodfire BBQ
- Kinnon and Co, Longreach: we overnighted in Longreach and decided at the very last minute to head out to the Thomson River Cruise… and are so glad we did! It was a night we will remember forever: watching the sunset cruising the river on a paddlewheeler, learning about the outback watching the sound and light show, eating a copious meal under the stars and listening to bush poetry. This remains by far our favourite experience. Richard and Marisse Kinnon and their team have done so much for the region and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to meet with them in person.
- Qantas Founders Museum: a visit in the outback isn’t a real one without stopping at the museum and boarding the 747!
If like us you only have a couple of days to visit Queensland’s outback please don’t put it off. There is a lot of driving but the memories you will create will remain with you forever.
